Margaret Bernadet July 31, 1934 - May 23, 2026
“People can change, look at me, I’m in my eighties.” Marg exclaimed when she realized the changes from her new faith in Jesus.
Margaret was born in Vancouver on July 31, 1934, the youngest of two siblings. The family lived modestly in the Hastings Street neighbourhood with her dad drifting between business ownership, manual labour, and “Pogey”. Her mom worked at “The Bay” and running a rooming house. After leaving school, Marg was employed as a secretary at Jarody and the Cox-Long Lumber Yards. During this time she enjoyed going out bowling, seeing many movies and getting up to general hyjinx with her best friend, Blanche.
In 1955, Marg married Maurice Bernadet in Vancouver and they moved to Saskatchewan to start a new life on the prairies. They drove a thousand miles in the “General”, a 1 ton grain truck, to a drafty farm house without indoor plumbing.
Her ministry as a mom, and helper of moms, was in four phases; first the “boys” Craig and Mark, then the “girls” Cheryl and Leanne, then the grandkids, Brandon and Kenton, then Kyla and Kevin, and nieces and nephews when needed. Her devotion was big.
Marg valued family more than life and enjoyed family dinners, picnics, little babies, walks in the forest, photo albums and children’s “firsts”. She delighted in every family member’s phone call, text or photo.
In 2014, Marg and Maurice moved to South Country Village in Medicine Hat with the care of daughters Cheryl and Leanne, adopted son, Burke and grandchild, Kevin. Marg thought of herself as an introvert, but we knew her as a high energy extrovert that excelled in engaging people, with many calling her their adopted “mom”. She was an active part of the community, ministering at church by wheeling people to service until her strength faded, or joyfully greeting people at the door. She was a careful listener, open minded, always curious and never judgemental.
Her husband of 60 years, Maurice, passed away in 2014 and she remained devoted to him her entire life.
Marg lived her life to the fullest within the limits of a failing heart. A week before her passing, she asked her son Craig for a ride on his motorcycle to experience the freedom he talked about. She was adamant that she would never again go to a hospital for medical intervention. She trusted fully in God’s timing, joyfully expressing her blessings daily. The day before going into palliative care, she washed her windows and then she passed, peacefully surrounded by family, at the age of 91, living life as if already in the kingdom. She will be dearly missed.
Margaret is survived by son, Craig Bernadet and grandsons, Brandon and Kenton (Amy Erving); son, Mark (Myja) Bernadet and grandchildren, Nathan, Danielle (Mike) Wolf and great-grand- children, John, Everett and Fletcher; and Caleb and great-granddaughter, Emilee Hutchinson; daughter, Cheryl Bernadet and granddaughter, Kyla and great-grandchildren, Blake, Keira, Scarlett; and grandson, Kevin Bernadet (Larissa Radke) great-grandson Finnley; daughter, Leanne Berg (Burke Suidan) and granddaughter, Megan (Craig) Taylor and great-grandchildren, Chevy and Madden.
A private graveside service was held in Margaret’s honour.

Muriel found joy in the simple and meaningful moments of life. She enjoyed curling, bowling and alongside Dale, loved cheering on the Medicine Hat Tigers and the Medicine Hat Mavericks. Above all, Muriel treasured time spent with her family. She loved camping trips with Dale and family gatherings filled with laughter, games, and cherished memories. She took great pride in watching her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren participate in sports and activities, always their biggest supporter. Muriel will be especially remembered for the Smarties she always kept on hand to share with her great-grandchildren — a small gesture that brought so much joy. Carol Barton October 9, 1942 - May 19, 2026
It is with saddened hearts that our family announces the passing of our dear wife and mother, Carol Barton on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at St. Joseph’s Home - Carmel Hospice in Medicine Hat following a courageous and hard-fought battle with acoustic neuroma.
Carol was born October 9, 1942 in Brandon, Manitoba, and was the third youngest daughter of Harry and Agnes Hodgson. She met Clarence on a blind date in 1964, while he was there working at the Brandon Sun and they married a year later on June 19, 1965. Two winters in Manitoba were enough for Clarence and they returned to Medicine Hat where Carol got a job with the Household Finance Corporation.
This move would not last long as the printing industry took them to Penticton, Lethbridge, back to Medicine Hat and then Bow Island where they purchased the Forty Mile Commentator and Cypress Courier. While Clarence looked after production and sales, Carol ran the office on top of looking after the girls and the home. There would be one final move back to Medicine Hat in 1990.
Carol enjoyed visiting with their many friends, travelling with family as well as taking care of and cheering on her grandkids.
Cherishing Carol’s memory are her loving husband, Clarence; daughters, Joanne (Cam) Ens and Donna (Greg) Herman; grandchildren, Kristine (Darrian Craven) Ens, Ryley Ens and Brendon Herman; sister-in-law, Valerie Barton of Ottawa as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Carol was predeceased by her parents, Harry and Anges Hodgson; older sisters, Joyce Tait and Jerry Hurst, younger sister, Joanne Lacey as well as Clarence’s parents, Clarence and Edith Barton.
A private family interment will take place at a later date.
Our family cannot begin to fully express our gratitude for the initial care given by nursing staff on 4 West at MH Regional Hospital as well as the exceptional care received at St. Joseph’s Home over the past 10 weeks which was above and beyond what we could have asked for. Thank You to Dr. Jonker, Dr. Monty, Dr. Dirker and Dr. Majeed for their excellent care and guidance throughout Carol’s time there.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to St. Joseph’s Home, 156 3 Street N.E., Medicine Hat, AB, T1A 5M2, or the charity of one’s choice.

1928 - Gabrielle Pelchat - 2026
“Well, what are you gonna do about it?” Gay was often heard saying this—usually followed by a shrug and a laugh. In her final days, this remained her response both to her awareness of a slipping memory and in reference to a political issue she read about in the newspaper. She was exceptionally smart and deeply informed about the world around her and was a pragmatist to the bottom of her toes. Gay was predeceased by her parents, Aurore and Louis Pelchat (not a surprise at 98 years of age!); her ten siblings and most of her dearest friends. Old age is not for sissies, and Gay was no sissy. She loved her family fiercely, and we hope she was welcomed home by all of them with affection, wine, and laughter—which is exactly how the Pelchat family greeted one another after any prolonged absence. On May 6, 1928, Gay was born into a loving, hardworking farming family. After graduating from high school, she went on to teachers’ college with the wholehearted support of her parents. Teaching was more than a career—it was a calling. By the 1970s, she became Assistant Superintendent of the Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education, a role she held proudly until her retirement. Gabrielle Jean Pelchat died peacefully in her sleep on April 18, 2026, at the age of *almost* ninety-eight years. What more could we ask for? She left the world better than she found it—and she did it with common sense, conviction, and a healthy dose of laughter. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, strength, and commitment to education and family. A graveside service will be held at Hillside Cemetery on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery gates at 12:45 p.m. An informal celebration of Gay’s life will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Saamis Creekside Centre, 11 Dunmore Rd SE, Medicine Hat, AB, T1A 3N9. A luncheon and time of fellowship will continue until 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Gay’s memory to Monsignor McCoy High School by cheque (in person or through the mail), or via the link available in her obituary on the Saamis Memorial Funeral Chapel website. Condolences may be sent to condolences@saamis.com subject heading Gabrielle Pelchat. Funeral arrangements by
